More information on how we get our beeswax: When we remove the surplus honey frames from our beehives at the end of the summer, the honeycomb has already been capped by the honeybees with a beautiful covering of beeswax to keep it clean and safe. In order to extract the liquid honey from the frames we first remove the beeswax with a special knife and put the beeswax aside to melt down and clean at a later stage. This beeswax needs to be melted and filtered a number of times to ensure that it is sufficiently clean to use for making beeswax wraps, candles or balm. Time consuming but so rewarding to see the beautiful block of clean, fragrant beeswax at the end! How we make our beeswax birthday cake candles: These adorable beeswax birthday cake candles are made by hand-dipping cotton braided wick several times in our pure Irish beeswax. With each dipping the layers build slowly around the cotton wick, finally arriving at the size we need after several dippings. The candles are not always completely uniform in shape and size leading to a rustic and artisanal style. Burning instructions for your beeswax candle: When you light a beeswax candle for the first time it is recommended that you allow your wax melt and form a pool close to the edge of the candle before extinguishing. This will form a wax wall and prevent tunnelling in subsequent burns. As your candle burns lower bend the wax wall inwards (also called “hugging”) helping to contain the wax pool. Keep the cotton wick trimmed to around 5mm before each lighting.
